CAMEL
Camel (hair) refers to the fur from the body of a camel, but more generally to the fibre that may be made from either pure camel hair or a blend of camel hair and another fibre.
Camel hair, as many other fibers such as qiviut, yak, etc, has two components: outer stronger and protective guard hair and a very fine undercoat. The undercoat, which is shorter and finer than guard hair, is more insulating. It is very soft and frequently used in the making of textiles for coats. Its high thermostatic properties provide insulation.
It used to be popular at the beginning of the 20th century and faded to give way to "newer" fibers such as qiviut, yak or bison.
MountainMasche like to use camel / baby camel hair in its natural colour for its insulation and thermal properties. It has more strength than pure qiviut and is therefore ideal for sweaters and cardigans.
